The Evolution of Prohibition to Legalization

Early Prohibition

Cannabis has been known to man for many thousands of years. Old cultures found it useful in healing and leisure. But the dramatic change happened only in the twentieth century. During the 1930s, the United States administration decided to wage war on cannabis. The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 made the use of it and its possession to be unlawful. Other propaganda films include “Reefer Madness” which only contributed to people’s anxiety and ignorance.

Factors Leading to Legalization

The youth of the 1960s and 1970s with their counter-culture movement started voicing their dissent against the anti-cannabis campaigns. The consumers tried to use advocacy for personal freedoms along with the advantages of cannabis use. It was also known that it had other useful qualities which science began to reveal to have healing attributes.

Milestones in Legalization

The 21st century witnessed some advancement. The first two known states in the US to legalize cannabis were Colorado and Washington. Canada was the first G7 nation to follow in 2018. Other countries also adopted the process of legalization such as Uruguay.  Nowadays many territories of the work are considering legalising the usage of cannabis.
